Michigan State University is offering a funded PhD opportunity starting Fall 2026 in the School of Planning, Design, and Construction. Candidates will concentrate in Environmental Design, working at the intersection of participatory planning, climate adaptation, sustainable landscape systems, and design for health, equity, access, and environment.
The position allows scholars to develop their own research proposals within broader themes, bridging design, science, and community action. Research will aim to address how built and natural environments can support more resilient, inclusive, and just futures.
Tasks
The PhD scholar will be expected to:
- Engage in innovative research in areas such as climate resilience, community-based planning, sustainable landscape systems, and environmental justice.
- Develop and refine a self-driven research proposal that contributes to these themes.
- Use both quantitative and qualitative data methods, integrating GIS analysis and spatial/environmental design tools.
- Participate in community engagement and outreach.
- Produce visual and spatial representations of research outcomes using tools like Adobe Creative Suite, R, Python, or similar.
- Communicate findings effectively to academic, professional, and community audiences.

Qualifications (Education and Certification, Experience)
- Master’s degree in Landscape Architecture, Architecture, Urban Planning, Community & Regional Planning, or a closely related field.
- Strong academic record and demonstrated motivation for research with social/environmental impact.
- Proficiency in quantitative and qualitative research methods.
- Experience with GIS software (ArcGIS Pro required; QGIS or equivalent a plus).
- Skills in data visualization and with tools such as Adobe Creative Suite and/or programming/data platforms (R, Python, etc.).
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and in interdisciplinary teams.

- Start Date: Fall 2026
- Funding: Fully funded for the first two years, with potential for continued support afterwards.
