Background & Job Description

Power Shift Africa (PSA) is a Pan-African climate and energy think-and-do tank established in 2018 to strengthen Africa’s voice in global climate action. Based on an Africa-led approach, PSA provides strategic communications, advocacy, and policy support to drive climate action, mobilize climate finance, and promote a just energy transition across the continent.

PSA collaborates with governments, civil society organizations, grassroots movements, policymakers, academia, and media outlets to ensure African perspectives shape global climate debates. Its mission is to amplify African expertise, strengthen advocacy for equitable financing, and advance low-carbon, climate-resilient development.

The Project Officer – Climate Finance will contribute to PSA’s climate finance and energy programs. Working remotely (with preference for African-based candidates), the officer will support research, advocacy campaigns, policy development, and project coordination. The role also provides opportunities for mentorship and professional growth under the Climate Finance Fellowship, a 12-month program led by Surge Climate Talent (SCT) in partnership with Global Good x Amani.

The fellowship is designed for finance professionals—particularly those transitioning from banking, accounting, investment, or financial management—who aspire to make meaningful contributions to climate action, sustainable development, and Africa’s energy transition.

Tasks

The Project Officer – Climate Finance will support PSA’s research, campaigns, and project management efforts. Key responsibilities include:

1. Research and Policy Analysis

Conduct analysis of public and climate finance flows to identify gaps, opportunities, and challenges for Africa’s just energy transition.
Draft policy briefs, reports, and recommendations that influence decision-making at national, regional, and international levels.
Collaborate with PSA’s energy and adaptation teams to mainstream climate finance across programs and advocacy efforts.

2. Campaigns, Advocacy, and Communications

Contribute to flagship campaigns such as Don’t Gas Africa, Mission 300, and Adapt2Live by developing strategies and communications materials.
Draft high-quality content, including blogs, newsletters, briefing papers, and social media advocacy messages.
Monitor climate finance news, policy updates, and global developments, sharing insights to guide advocacy approaches.
Support PSA in strengthening visibility and coherence of campaigns to drive public awareness and financial reforms.

3. Project Coordination & Partnerships

Assist with project management tasks, including work plan preparation, progress tracking, and donor reporting.
Support stakeholder engagement, including African governments, financial institutions, and international climate actors.
Coordinate and facilitate virtual and in-person workshops, technical meetings, and policy dialogues, producing accurate reports.
Maintain strong relationships with regional partners, civil society organizations, and networks promoting climate finance.

Qualifications

Education and Certification

A Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or related fields from a recognized institution.

Professional Experience

3–5 years of professional experience in finance, investments, banking, or public/private financial institutions.
Strong communication skills (written and verbal) with proven ability to present financial analysis to diverse audiences.
Solid analytical and research skills, including financial data interpretation and policy synthesis.
Demonstrated motivation to pivot into climate finance and sustainable development, with commitment to social and environmental justice.

Skills and Competencies

Cultural and political awareness with sensitivity to diverse African contexts.
Strong teamwork and collaboration skills, with ability to build and sustain professional networks.
Adaptability and resilience in dynamic, fast-paced environments.
Full-time availability for the 12-month fellowship, with flexibility for travel when required.

Desired Qualifications

Experience working with African financial institutions or regional policy frameworks.
Previous involvement in social, environmental, or development initiatives.

Proficiency in additional languages such as French, Arabic, or Swahili is an asset.
