Background & Job Description

The African Women’s Development Fund (AWDF) is a Pan-African feminist grant-making organization that has been at the forefront of supporting women’s rights and feminist movements for over 24 years. AWDF has disbursed approximately USD 100 million to women’s rights organizations across Africa and selected Middle Eastern countries, fostering social change, movement building, and transformative advocacy that promotes gender justice.

As a key player in feminist resourcing, AWDF strengthens organizations and movements that challenge systemic inequality, influence laws and policies, and advance social norms that promote equity. The organization’s grantmaking and programmatic work focus on initiatives that produce tangible outcomes for women and girls, build movement capacity, and facilitate the growth of networks of feminist change-makers.

To continue championing women’s rights, AWDF is seeking a Programme Manager, Resourcing Movements. This leadership role will guide the strategic vision and day-to-day operations of the Resourcing Unit. The Programme Manager will be responsible for conceptualizing, implementing, and supervising grantmaking strategies, fostering meaningful partnerships, and ensuring alignment with AWDF’s overall programmatic objectives.

The successful candidate will also serve on the Senior Management Team (SMT), participating in organization-wide decision-making and contributing to AWDF’s vision of creating a just and gender-equitable Africa. Tasks

The Programme Manager, Resourcing Movements, will have a range of strategic and operational responsibilities, including:

Strategic Leadership

  • Lead the Resourcing Unit, providing vision and direction to achieve AWDF’s goals in resourcing feminist movements.
  • Develop and implement innovative grantmaking strategies that are responsive, flexible, and agile.
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of resourcing initiatives, ensuring alignment with AWDF’s organizational strategy and feminist principles.

Grantmaking & Program Implementation

  • Oversee the design, planning, and management of grant programs, including annual budgets, application processes, and disbursement of funds.
  • Ensure that grants support diverse feminist organizations, networks, and initiatives, with a focus on transformative impact.
  • Promote adaptive programming to respond to evolving needs and priorities of feminist movements.

Partnership & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Cultivate meaningful relationships with grantee partners, feminist activists, and movement actors across Africa.
  • Engage with regional and global stakeholders to advance resourcing strategies and advocate for gender justice.
  • Support fundraising efforts by providing expertise in grant proposal development, donor engagement, and reporting.

Advocacy & Knowledge Management

  • Contribute to AWDF’s advocacy initiatives by integrating insights from resourcing strategies and grantee feedback.
  • Develop knowledge-sharing platforms and learning agendas to document best practices in feminist grantmaking.
  • Participate in forums and networks to strengthen the visibility and influence of AWDF-supported movements.

Team Management

  • Supervise and mentor the Resourcing Unit team, fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration, and accountability.
  • Collaborate with other programme managers, particularly in the Nurturing Movements and Impact & Learning units, to ensure coherence in organizational programming.
  • Support capacity building within the unit to strengthen technical skills, leadership, and knowledge of feminist grantmaking.

Reporting & Administration

  • Prepare periodic reports, updates, and briefings for the SMT and donors, highlighting progress, challenges, and impact.
  • Ensure compliance with AWDF’s internal policies, operational procedures, and ethical standards.
  • Maintain high standards of record-keeping and documentation related to grantmaking, partnerships, and program activities.

Qualifications

Education & Certification

  • A bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences, Development Studies, Gender Studies, Public Policy, or related disciplines is required.
  • Advanced degrees or professional certifications in gender studies, program management, or development are desirable.

Experience

  • A minimum of 7–10 years of experience in feminist grantmaking, philanthropy, or program management.
  • Demonstrated track record in managing grants, partnerships, or resources for women’s rights and gender justice initiatives.
  • Experience leading teams and working within diverse, multicultural, and Pan-African contexts.
  • Familiarity with movement-building strategies, participatory program design, and monitoring and evaluation frameworks.
  • Strong analytical, advocacy, and communication skills.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively with civil society, grantee partners, and donor agencies.

Skills & Competencies

  • Deep understanding of African feminist movements, gender equality, and social justice issues.
  • Strong strategic thinking and leadership skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, negotiation, and relationship-building abilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver high-quality results under tight deadlines.
  • Proficiency in English; knowledge of other African languages is an advantage.
